Summary

[edit]
Description

Tucked away near the South Fork of the Salmon River, barely visible atop a mountain, lies Pilot Peak Lookout. This lookout, built over 50 years ago, required updates and restoration work to bring it back to its original condition.

Engineers on the Payette National Forest are working in conjunction with contractors to not only restore the building but to make it safe for those who man the building for years to come.

As it was built in the 1930s this building had traces of lead-based paint that needed to be removed or abated. As seen in these photos, to test the paint on the building, sections of the paint are removed or chipped away, and a lead check swab is run across the paint in question. If it contains lead, the swab turns red.
