FIELDS OF THE UNWANTED

Transforming a razed demolition site at 8 Queen Victoria Street, Fremantle, "Field of the Unwanted" uses weeds, "plants that grow where they are not wanted", to question ideas around value, contribution and displacement experienced by members of our own communities

Phase 1: Saw Field of the Unwanted attempt to elevate the status of weeds through the formation of an ordered garden. A weed rescue and resettlement service collected weeds from Fremantle and surrounding suburbs to give them a home at the cultivated field at Queen Victoria Street.

Acting as custodians of the various weed plots, the surrounding community were invited to tend, grow and create an emerging installation, caring for the weeds till the end of their lifespan.

Phase 2: Will allow the divisions and order created to dissolve and the different weed varieties to mingle within the confines of the fence lines.

Field of the Unwanted is a temporary art installation
