Description

The Presidential Palace on Murillo Square dates from 1825. During an uprising in 1875, the building was set aflame, thus earning the nickname Burnt Palace (Palacio Quemado). To the right is the Cathedral.

La Paz’s main square is named after Pedro Domingo Murillo (1757-1810) who was a leader in the La Paz Revolution of 16 July 1809. Spanish troops hanged him and others the following January. Bolivia achieved independence from Spain on 6 August 1825, the last country in Latin America to do so.

La Paz (elev.3,240m/11,942ft) was founded in the Andes by the Spaniards in 1548 in a canyon created by the Choqueyapu River. The administrative capital of Bolivia shifted to La Paz in 1898 while Sucre remained the constitutional and judiciary capital.
