Description

A statue commemorating Colonel Ignacio Warnes (1772-1816), Hero of the Independence, stands in the center of Plaza 24 de Septiembre. A province and its capital city in the Santa Cruz Department are named after him.

On 24 September 1810, the local population revolted against the colonial authorities but remained loyal to the King of Spain. In 1813 a commander in the Argentine revolutionary armies sent Colonel Ignacio Warnes to Santa Cruz to liberate it. He assumed control of the city’s government and quickly gathered the support of all elements of the population for the revolutionary cause. On 25 May 1814 he was one of the commanders in the Battle of Florida (a part of the local province) which was an important victory over Spanish forces in the region. In 1816 the imperial forces launched a new offensive, defeating the revolutionary army and killing Warnes. Bolivia did not achieve independence from Spain until 6 August 1825, the last country in Latin America to do so.

Santa Cruz de la Sierra (elev. 416m/1,365ft) became the most populous city in Bolivia at the start of the 21st century, overtaking La Paz. (La Paz remains the most populous metropolitan area, however.) Santa Cruz is the most economically prosperous city in the country. As the city has grown, it has spread out rather than up.
