Description

View of Plaza 24 de Septiembre from the clock tower of the Basílica Menor de San Lorenzo (St. Lawrence Basilica). On 24 September 1810, the local population revolted against the colonial authorities but remained loyal to the King of Spain.

Santa Cruz de la Sierra (elev. 416m/1,365ft) became the most populous city in Bolivia at the start of the 21st century, overtaking La Paz. (La Paz remains the most populous metropolitan area, however.) Santa Cruz is the most economically prosperous city in the country. As the city has grown, it has spread out rather than up.
