Title
2016T788: Probus coin
Description
English: Treasure case 2016T788, 93 coins. Later joined by two addenda: 2017T1204 (five copper alloy Roman radiates, one of which is fused to a sixth, incomplete coin; catalogue added to this record, below) and 2020T23 (three Roman coins, recorded separately at NMS-1F78BF).

2016T788: A scattered hoard of 93 base silver and copper alloy Roman radiates dating to the period c. AD 258 - 279. The coins were found scattered over an area of c. 15 metres with a few outliers, but appeared to be most densely concentrated towards the line of the hedgerow bordering the field. The coins were in poor condition with many of them illegible to some degree. No images were taken other than the latest coin = Probus, mint of Lyon; Bastien's series 4 or 6 (AD 277 / 279).

A heavily worn as of Vespasian was submitted as being potentially part of the hoard, but it was found well away from the main scatter zone and does not exhibit any signs of having been deposited with the other coins in the group. It is, therefore, likely to be unrelated to the hoard. One milled coin (illegible) was initially handed in as part of the group, but was subsequently discovered to be modern and is not included in the catalogue.

Discussion: Most of the coins are in extremely poor condition, with a number fused together, or showing evidence of having been fused to another coin in the past. For this reason, it has not been possible, in most cases to assign a mint. Those which are legible, or partially legible, consist of a mixture of legitimate issues and contemporary copies from the Central and Gallic empires, the majority being copper alloy, with a small percentage of base silver, or silver washed coins present; these are mostly from the sole reign of Gallienus (AD 260 - 268) and the reform under Aurelian and his successors. A single silver radiate of Gallienus' joint reign with Valerian (dated AD 258 - 259) is the earliest coin represented. The latest ruler represented is (Probus (AD 276 - 282). A small quantity of barbarous copies are also present.

2017T1204: A scattered hoard of five copper alloy Roman radiates, one of which is fused to a sixth, incomplete coin, addendum to a hoard of 93 base silver and copper alloy radiates (2016 T788).

Discussion: As with the original group (2016 T788) most of the coins are in extremely poor condition with a number fused or showing evidence of having been fused to another coin in the past. For this reason, it has not been possible, in most cases to assign a mint. The current group of coins under discussion fits well in terms of date and rulers represented with the previous group of coins recorded and does not alter the proposed date range.
