| Description |
The Great Mosque of Xi’an is garden-style with Chinese architecture, albeit with Arabic writing immediately above this doorway. Around 742 Emperor Xuanzong decreed that a place of worship was to be built for the Muslim community in the Tang dynasty’s capital of Chang’an (Xi’an today). The collapse of the Tang dynasty in 907 saw the destruction of Chang’an. The mosque was rebuilt multiple times over succeeding centuries. During the Ming dynasty (1368–1644; capital Nanjing and then Beijing) under the patronage of Emperor Hongwu (r.1368-1398), the mosque was reconstructed yet again around 1380 with further renovations and additions during the Qing dynasty (1644-1912).
