Summary

[edit]
Description

Converting tea leaves to black tea is a multi-step process that begins with an initial drying of the leaves in large withering troughs with air blowing up from the bottom to reduce the moisture by 45%. Further drying and fermenting stages (among other steps) finally yield the black tea which is packaged in bulk to be taken to the tea auction. Five kilograms of tea leaves are needed to produce one kilogram of black tea.

James Taylor (1835-1892) introduced tea plantations to British Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1867 after learning the basics of tea growing in India the previous year. Scottish grocer Thomas Lipton (1848-1931) visited Taylor in British Ceylon in 1890. Lipton purchased his own tea estates there so he could control quality and costs in order to sell a consistent tea experience at an affordable price. In 1893 he established the Thomas J Lipton Co. in Hoboken, New Jersey, to package and market tea using the advertising slogan “Direct from the tea gardens to the teapot.”
