| Description |
English: Elk roaming the plains at the Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado contains the tallest sand dunes (750 feet, 229 meters) on the continent lie at the foot of the alpine mountains of the Sangre de Cristo range. The sand was left by ancient lakes and piled high by the winds. Blanca Peak just south of Great Sand Dunes, is one of four sacred mountains to the Navajo people. The dunefield spreads across 30 square miles creating a unique high-altitude desert environment. The surface of the sand can reach 150 degrees Fahrenheit on a summer afternoon and drop to minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit on a winter night. These dunes are moist year-round due to precipitation in the region. |
