| Description |
English: Roughly 60,000 years ago, the Capulin Volcano National Monument was a site of an active volcano in a field of explosive mountains dotting the northern New Mexico plains. The Capulin cone rises more than 1,300 feet above those plains and features a cone peppered with lava rocks. From the rim, it is easy to see many of the near 100 volcanic peaks and lava capped mesas nearby. The largest of these volcanic peaks is the Sierra Grande about 10 miles to the southeast which stands about 2,200 feet tall. Trails inside the cone of Capulin take visitors down into the inactive volcanic mountain. The plains around the volcano have been a crossroads of humanity to tens of thousands of years. |
