Second Rockcress (Boechera retrofracta syn. Boechera holboellii var. secunda), Mustard family (Brassicaceae). Grown from seeds, Cottonwood Heights, Utah. Descriptions of Boechera retrofracta and Boechera puberula are very similar, except few subtle details. The basal leaves are usually dentate in B.p. and entire in B.r.; the pedicels of fruits are at right angle to the stem and curved down in B.p. and reflexed abruptly in B.r.; the siliques are longer and appressed closer to the stem in B.r.; the fruits are pubescent in B.p. and glabrous in B.r.; the seeds are 1.4-2.0 mm long in B.p. and 1.0-1.4 mm in B.r. Each feature individually is insufficient to distinguish them reliably, but in combination, they are quite convincing. |
