Amanita proxima Dumée Image location: Caracena Canyon, Valderroman, Soria, Spain I heard a talk with my 2005 Italy mushroom foray group led by Sardinian Amanita specialist, Salvatore Curreli, on how to distinguish A proxima from A ovoidea. He brought several specimens of both species to the talk and since then I have been able to identify each of the species whenever I’ve run across them. The character of Amanita proxima that stands out different from A ovoidea is the color of the volva base. Rufus is the term I’ve seen used for the color. I posted photos of his Amanita proxima specimens on MO at the link below. This year the group decided to go to Spain for a change with Christine Fischer and Jose Santana, both researchers at the Forest Science Center of Catalonia, arranging our forays and leading us. https://mushroomobserver.org/134433?q=gxr Recognized by sight
