Description

Ophiocordyceps melolonthae (Tul. & C. Tul.) G.H. Sung, J.M. Sung, Hywel-Jones & Spatafora

Image location: Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Specimen collected by guide & presented to Dr. Jennifer Zaspel (entomologist at Purdue) who took this picture. The host is apparently a large dynastine scarab beetle larva. Thanks to Brett Ratcliffe (Univ. of Nebraska State Museum) for sending the picture, and Dr. Zaspel for permission to post it. As Dr. Ratcliffe noted in his e-mail: “Biggest Cordyceps I ever saw.” Indeed!!

Recognized by sight: compare with recent Costa Rican observations Observation 251361 & Observation 262182

For more information about this, see the observation page at Mushroom Observer.
