Title
2015T841: Post-medieval silver bodkin
Description
English:

Report on potential treasure for HM Coroner

Treasure Number: 2015 T841

Find spot: Baconsthorpe, Norfolk

PAS Database number: LANCUM-B369F9

Period: Post-Medieval

Finder: Paul Henderson

Date of Discovery: 23/10/15

Circumstance of discovery: Metal Detecting

Description: One complete silver bodkin. It is rectangular-sectioned with a small spoon or 'ear scoop' at one terminal above a rectangular aperture. Below the aperture, the surface on one side is decorated with a cross-hatched engraving between two pairs of parallel engraved lines. Roughly halfway down its length, the bodkin is bent at a 90-degree angle. The bodkin then terminates in a narrow point.

Discussion: Similar examples from the same period can be found on the PAS database: LANCUM-5FCF1B, and NMS-3DB5C. These can be attributed to the Post-Medieval period spanning from the 16th to early 18th century.

Conclusion: Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
