| Description |
The fortified city, or ksar, of Aït Ben Haddou in the early morning light before the sun appears above the horizon. The ksar got its start in the 11th century as a trading post along the caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakesh. The existing earthen structures date from no earlier than the 17th century. At the top of Aït Ben Haddou (‘aït’ means hill) is a fortified granary (agadir). The Ounila River which runs past the base of the ksar is nearly dry at this time of year. The ksar has been used as a set for many films from Oscar-winner “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962) to the TV series “Game of Thrones.” The Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
