Description
English: As seen in July 2015, this view from the Trans-Canada Highway near Hemlo, Ontario, Canada looks northward across Moose Lake to the Williams Gold Mine. The first in operation of what would eventually be three gold mines in the so-called Hemlo Camp about 25 miles east of the town of Marathon, the Williams Mine opened in 1985 and was named in honor of one Dr. J. Williams, who in the 1940s was among the first prospectors to note a local presence of gold in economically important quantities. Now operated by Barrick Gold, this combination underground and open-pit mine produces about 235,000 troy ounces in a typical year.
