Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The famous White River Thermometer in White River, Ontario, Canada as seen on a July 2015 midday. That White River is on average the coldest city in Canada, or has logged the country's lowest recorded temperature, is an oft-repeated but demonstrably untrue urban myth. Nonetheless, this remote logging town of about 600 makes the most of the myth in enticing curious travelers along the Trans-Canada Highway to stop off in town to fill their fuel tank, have a bite to eat, or perhaps visit the nearby White River Heritage Museum with its trove of Winnie-the-Pooh memorabilia (being the supposed hometown of the real-life bear that inspired the beloved literary character). This 25-foot replica thermometer - permanently fixed at a temperature of -72°F, the alleged record-setting reading - is one of a chain of similar offbeat roadside monuments that have been erected along this stretch of the highway by local business interests.
