English: Looking eastward along the Spanish River from the Centre Street bridge in Espanola, Ontario, Canada, we see rising in the background the large Domtar paper mill on the outskirts of town. Both the river and the area through which it flows are said to take their names from an encounter by 17th-century explorers and fur trappers with a tribe of Spanish-speaking Ojibwe people, which they apparently learned from a captive Spanish woman in their midst. The town of Espanola per se, however, traces its history back only as far as the founding in 1899 of what was then called the Spanish River Pulp and Paper Company. Sequentially, logging operations, the construction of the mill itself and Webbwood Falls Dam, and the development of a company town with worker housing followed. The mill has been operated by Domtar since 1998 and today, according to its website, produces "more than 200 different grades of technical and specialty papers, as well as high quality Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft pulp".
