[edit]Description20150704 - 033 - Flowerpot Island, Fathom Five National Marine Park, Ont. - Small Flowerpot and a new one in the making.jpg |
English: Seen at right is the smaller of the two "flowerpots" on Flowerpot Island, part of Fathom Five National Marine Park in Ontario, Canada. These pillars of rock were carved out of the cliffs at the edge of the island through a combination of two processes: first, thousands of years of erosion by waves, ice, and wind; second, the receding of the water level in Lake Huron after the most recent Ice Age. The "flowerpots" are made up of a capstone of more resistant limestone which overlays a shaft of dolomite, a softer type of rock that dissolves more readily in water (hence the typical profile; wider at the top and gradually narrowing as you go down). As the lake levels have receded further, more rock at the base is exposed and eroded, and the "flowerpots" gradually increase in height relative to the surface. At left, an outcropping of rock is beginning to be formed into another flowerpot by the same process. As seen from aboard the Tobermory Frontier on a June 2015 cruise. |
