[edit]Description20150704 - 021 - Tobermory, Ont. - Wreck of the "City of Grand Rapids".jpg |
English: The wreck of the City of Grand Rapids, as seen in July 2015 from aboard the Tobermory Frontier at Big Tub Harbour in Tobermory, Ontario, Canada. One of the two shallow-water wrecks (along with the schooner Sweepstakes) that serve as Big Tub's marquee visitor attractions, the City of Grand Rapids was a lake-going passenger steamer that caught fire for unknown reasons while docked at nearby Little Tub Harbour in October 1907, and - as was customary in such cases - was initially intended to be towed to open waters so as to ensure the fire didn't spread to other vessels. Instead, it broke free and drifted into Big Tub, where it continued burning and ultimately sank. Today, while clearly visible and easily accessible to divers, the City of Grand Rapids is in a markedly more deteriorated condition than the Sweepstakes, lying in pieces on the floor of the harbor with portions of the ribbing and boiler breaching the surface when water levels are low. |
