Description

In 1990 werd de pas voor de eerste keer beklommen in de Giro d'Italia. Vrijwel alle keren werd de meest zware klim, die vanuit Mazzo di Valtellina, beklommen. Alleen in 1990 kwam men vanuit Monno.

De renners vrezen de klim en zo beweerde Lance Armstrong dat dit wel de meest zware klim was die hij ooit had gereden. "It's a terrible climb...it's perfect for a mountain bike. On the hardest parts, I was riding a 39x27 and I was hurting, really hurting. (Mortirolo) is the hardest climb I've ever ridden."

Marco Pantani brak in 1994 definitief door als klimmer door Indurain en latere winnaar Berzin op de Passo del Mortirolo uit het wiel te rijden. Hij won de etappe en werd dat jaar tweede in de Giro. Hij reed ook de snelste tijd ooit op de Mortirolo; 42 min en 32 sec.
