Summary
[edit]Description2014 Fort Tryon Park tour view of Inwood Lowlands.jpg |
English: A view from Fort Tryon Park of the Inwood Lowlands, a low-lying flat plain which abuts the Harlem River and is underlayed with Inwood Marble, which is metamorphed limestone. It is the location of the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan, the northern part of Washington Heights, and part of the Bronx on the east side of the river. The marble was mined and used for many of the government buildings in Lower Manhattan. The three basic foundation rocks of Manhattan -- Manhattan Schist, Inwood Marble and Fordham Gneiss -- are complexly interfolded due to upthrusting, overthrusting, erosion, burial by sedimentation, glacial scouring and other geological processes.
