Summary
[edit]Description20140402-APHIS-UNK-0021 (13592561293).jpg | The spiny-tailed iguana is native to southern Mexico and Central America, however the release of three pet iguanas in 1979 has led to a populations of several thousand on Gasprilla Island in southwest Florida. In 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal Plant Health and Inspection Service (APHIS) Wildlife Services (WS) experts and local officials started a concerted effort to eradicate the animals which compete with native wildlife and damage property. By 2011, more than 9,400 iguanas had been trapped and removed. USDA photo by Rick Engeman. |
