Description The nutria harms riparian and wetland habitats worldwide. In collaboration with Portland State University and the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal Plant Health and Inspection Service (APHIS) Wildlife Services (WS) researchers evaluated the effectiveness of standard Vexar plastic mesh tubes in reducing nutria damage to newly planted trees and shrubs. All the plantings with tubes survived compared to only 17 percent of plantings without tubes. The use of such barriers may help in wetland restoration efforts. USDA photo.
