Asclepias speciosa—showy milkweed. Larval host and nectar food plant for many insects, including the monarch butterfly. Showy milkweed is found through the West of both the United States and Canada. Relatively easy to grow and drought tolerant, this milkweed has been widely planted in recent years in an attempt to protect the monarchs. Seeds are 6-9 mm long. The plant is grown at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA. 13 Sep 2014--Examining the seeds carefully, there appears to be some milkweed aphds (Aphis nerii) visable. |
