Description

Hypomyces chrysospermus Tul. & C. Tul.

Image location: Suson Park, St. Louis Co., Missouri, USA

A strange looking fungus that I removed from the soil it was in at this park. Believe it was in an area of the park that is mowed frequently. Had to slice it open to try to figure out what it was. Maybe a Hypomyces on a gilled mushroom??

Recognized by sight

Used references: Arora, Mushrooms Demystified. Called “Bolete Eater” in Arora. This clearly is the yellow form of H. chrysospermus, which also has a white form.
