English: While still in shock at hearing the news that Opel was pulling the plug on it's Australian operations yesterday, out came Fiat-Chrysler with the re-release of the Punto, a car Fiat co-developed with Opel, Opel's version being the Opel Corsa.
Well, now that the Opel Corsa is saying goodbuy to Australia, the Fiat Punto is saying G'day ... again! Sorry about that! Haha! The Fiat Punto was first released onto the Australian market in 2006, before being dropped in 2009 due to poor sales. It was the first Fiat to be sold in Australia since 1989. High pricing and a very small dealer network didn't help the Punto, which would also be the same reason's Opel would leave the Australian market. Now that Fiat has hooked up with Chrysler, the Punto is back, with a much lower starting price of $16,000AUD Drive Away and is being sold through Fiat dealerships, most of which are sold in the same showroom's with Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge. It's not going to be huge seller, but it'll bring much needed volume to Fiat Australia's figures. Fiat has had a few false starts in Australia, but it takes time and persistence, something GM didn't give Opel time to do in Australia and with Fiat's new found confidence in Australia, things are finally turning in the right direction for them. For the first 6 months of this year, Fiat sales are up 149%, from a low base, but it's getting better. |
