Die Storie van James-eiland (1456-1816)
1456 Die Portugese seevaarders, de Cademosto en Usodimare, het in die Gambië-rivier opgevaar en 'n klein eilandjie in die middel van die rivier gevind. Hier het hulle 'n gestorwe bemanningslid begrawe en die eiland is na hom vernoem, St. Andreas-eiland.
1861 Die hertog van Koerland (moderne Letland), wat 'n ryk wou stig, het die eiland van die heerser van Niumi verkry en 'n fort begin bou.
1661 Die Royal Adventurers of England Trading into Africa is deur Charles II geoktrooieer en 'n handelsmonopolie in Wes-Afrika gegee. In daardie jaar het die Engelse op die Koerlander-fort beslag gelê.
1672 Die Royal Adventurers het bankrot gespeel en die Royal African Company (RAC) het hul bedrywighede oorgeneem. James Island, aldus na James II hernoem, is hul basis gemaak.

The Story of James Island (1456-1816)
1456 The Portuguese sailors, de Cademosto and Usodimare, sailed up the Gambia river. They found a small island in the middle of the river, where they buried a sailor who died. The island was name St. Andrew's Island after him.
1861 The Duke of Courland (modern Latvia), wanting to establish an empire, acquired the island from the ruler of Niumi and began building a fort.
1661 The Royal Adventurers of England Trading into Africa was chartered and given a trading monopoly in West Africa by Charles II. In that year the English seized the Courlander fort.
1672 The Royal Adventurers went bankrupt, and the Royal African Company (RAC) took over their operations, making James Island (now renamed for James II) their base.
