Title
2012T3
Description
English: TREASURE CASE 2012 T3 Post Medieval Button

Description: Post Medieval silver button casing. It is hemispherical in shape, with a soldered silver wire loop at the apex. There is a raised band around the rim and the outer surface is decorated in alternate bands of plain raised lines and recessed lines which are filled with narrow, oblique lines. It is now hollow, but contains traces of a white paste which was probably used to secure a gem or glass setting. It is 12.67mm in diameter, 9.60mm long and weighs 0.92 grams.

Discussion: The object is most likely a button, similar to 2007 T540 and dates from the 18th Century. The button was initially reported as Treasure as was believed to be 16th to 17th Century in date - as spherical buttons such as 2009 T310 and 2011 T212, or as the upper section of a late Medieval to Post Medieval bell, such as 2010 T631. However the thicker construction of the metal and the residue on the inside suggests it is most comparable to 18th century style buttons, and as such falls outside the remit of the Treasure Act (1996) as it is less than 300 years old.
