English: Treasure Number: 2011 T206 Colchester District, Essex: Post Medieval bodkin
Date of Discovery: 5/3/11 Circumstances of discovery: whilst metal detecting Period: 17th century Description: post-medieval silver dress pin of bodkin type, oval in cross section. The wider base end is cut into a triangular form and also has an oval opening. Below this is a rectangular longitudinal opening and the pin has been bent across causing the opening to break. There is a groove on both sides from the peak of the triangular base to a third of the length of the pin. The pin tapers to the opposite end. Dimensions: Length: 67.91mm Width: 4.11mm Thickness: 2.51mm Weight: 7.1g Discussion: A similar example can be found from Broughton, Hampshire (PAS ref: WILT-9C13B5, 2009 T234) Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
