Description |
English: Burnham Hoard 2010 T509: Ceramic: The pottery in the hoard appears to produce three seperate vessel bases, giving a minimum of three vessels associated with the hoard, however only the one remained relatively in tact.
Area D: Block lifted vessel: The Burnham hoard contained one almost complete pottery vessel which was block lifted (hoard item T.D.2) before being deconstructed along fault lines to remove the metalwork contents. The fabric has a black core, and a batchy red-brown outer wall. There are flint inclusions throughout, however these are much more dense on the base of the vessels. In addition to the block lifted vessel, a selection of pottery sherds were collected from the area, both at the time of intial discovery by metal detecting, and during the subsequent archaeological excavation. DDP.1 rim sherds (breaks join) 13.43 grams. Estimated diameter 16cm DDP.2 19 Body sherds weighing 24.9 grams. T.D.2 Block lifted vessel. The base is an irregular oval, three diameter measurements were taken: 73.11mm, 77.63mm 74.27mm. The angle of the body wall extending from the base varied between angles of approximately 30 degrees and 47 degrees. T.D.3: 4 sherds making up a handle, 11.8 grams T.D.4: 14 Body sherds : 48.12 grams T.D.5: 1 Rim sherd 16.61 grams Area A: pottery sherds - it was clear that another pottery vessel of comparable fabric and style to T.D.2 was deposited in the pit - the base of this vessel is almost complete, along with numerous body sherds and the remains of two handles. AAP.1 26 body sherds: 85.75 grams AAP.2: 2x base?sherds 12.51 grams AAP.3 3 x joining base sherds, 96.04 grams. AAP.4: 19 body sherds 160.52 + 152.88 grams. AAP.5: 1 body sherd with handle/lug 47.54 grams
BBP.1 22 body sherds 136.32 grams |
