English: BURNHAM HOARD 2010 T509: Item D.3 Socketed Axe; South Eastern - Plain (Petters type A.1)

Copper alloy socketed axe. Rectangular cross section, rounded at corners of mouth. Wide upper mouth moulding narrower moulding below. Side loop extends from lower moulding, and is filled with corrosion. Cutting edge is damaged. Sides are slightly concave. Surface is highly corroded. Possible organic material in the socket. Two mouldings at mouth.


Length: 73.43mm. Weight: 124.29 grams. Socket opening: 26.15mm by 20.56mm. Mouth: 35.97mm by 31.31mm. 5.21mm thick. Loop: 18.24mm long, 5.76mm wide; located 13.35mm from mouth opening. Body: 27.75mm wide by 24.15mm thick. Cutting edge: 39.97mm
