English: BURNHAM HOARD 2010 T509: Item A.9 Socketed Axe; South Eastern - Plain (Petters type A.1)

Incomplete cast copper alloy socketed axe, deliberately broken across the body, removing the blade end. There is a wide upper mouth moulding with a narrower moulding below. The side loop extends from the lower mouth moulding; there is a corroded fragment of copper alloy adhering to the loop. The sides of the axe are straight. There are prominent casting seams on the sides of the axe. The socket has a prominent internal rib on one face, with a corroded copper alloy fragment adhering to the opposing face, located just below the mouth mouldings.

Length: 65.97mm. Weight: 180.93 grams. Socket opening: 29.07mm by 29.22mm. Mouth: 40.73mm by 39.79mm. Loop: 24.08mm long, located 15.56mm from mouth opening. Width of loop cannot be determined due to corrosion. Body: 31.07mm wide by 27.58mm thick. Cutting edge: 32.81mm
