English: BURNHAM HOARD 2010 T509: Item A.5 Socketed Axe; South Eastern - Pellet decorated (Petters type A.2)

Incomplete cast copper alloy socketed axe which has been deliberately cut just below the socket end removing the cutting edge. There is a wide upper mouth moulding, with a narrow, but pronounced lower mouth moulding. The top edge of the side loop is joined over the lower mouth moulding. There is a prominent casting seam visible on the sides and loop. There is a small casting flaw, in the form of an irregular oval opening, located on the un-looped side of the axe. The axe has a rectangular cross section, becoming more square at the mouth. The mouth has rounded corners. There is a small raised circular pellet on the front and back face of the axe, just below the lower mouth moulding. This axe contained four small corroded copper alloy fragments recorded as A.5.1 (below)

Length: 74.85mm. Weight: 163.18 grams. Socket opening: 28.20mm by 27.54mm. Socket mouth: 34.64mm by 35.22mm. Loop: 19.60mm long, 4.14mm wide; located 11.04mm from mouth opening. Body: 25.29mm wide by 22.71mm thick. Cutting edge: 27.89mm

A.5.1four small copper alloy corrosion fragments, weighing 0.7 grams.
