English: BURNHAM HOARD 2010 T509: item A.46 and A.48: Sword - Ewart Park

Two cast copper alloy fragments from an incomplete sword. The break between the two existing fragments is due to corrosion through the narrowest point.

Sword hilt (A.48). Both sides are slightly concave. There is an open slot, resulting in a forked opening. The break runs accross this point. The lower section (A.46) has a break across the grip and blade. The blade sides are concave. There is a 'T' bar finial. The grip have flanged sides. There are two openwork curves before the recasso, one of which contains the remains of a copper alloy rivet. The blade has a central rib with, giving it a lozenge cross section with tapering edges. There is a notch on each side of the blade.

A.46Length:142.42 Weight: 173.89grams 23.58mm wide across the hilt break 50.40mm wide across the widest point of shoulder 39.17mm wide across the blade 31.51mm wide across the blade (break) 11.03mm thick Rivet: 13.65mm long. Oval cross section 3.99mm by 4.64mm.

A.48Length: 46.41mm. Weight: 25.37grams. 32.51mm wide at terminal 18.18mm wide at narrowest point 25.04mm wide at broken end. 6.28mm thick
