Title
2010T509 Bronze Age hoard - Item A.3 Socketed axe
Description
English: BURNHAM HOARD 2010 T509: Item A.3 Socketed Axe; Plainseau

Complete cast copper alloy socketed axehead. The mouth has rounded corners. There is a wide upper mouth moulding with two narrower mouldings below. There is a small casting flaw on the non-looped side, where the lower mouth mouldings are not present. The top edge of the side loop joins over the two lower mouldings. The sides are concave, expanding at the blade end. Casting seams are prominent on the sides towards the mouth end of the body. The axe has cast decoration on the front and back face, in the form of two raised semi-circular rings, giving an 'egg-timer' impression, although these are very feint. Body has rectangular cross section. Cutting edge undamaged. There are two loose pieces of copper alloy inside the socket end, recorded as A.3.1 (below).

Length: 95.27mm. Weight: 261.83 grams. Socket opening: 27.04mm by 25.49mm. Socket Mouth: 38.67mm by 36.60mm. Loop: 21.34mm long, 5.59mm wide; located 9.59mm from mouth opening. Body: 25.48mm wide by 20.64mm thick. Cutting edge: 37.76mm.

A.3.1 small corroded copper alloy fragment weighs 1.7 grams.
