2010T306-Post-Medieval-silver-button-from-Groby |
||
Description |
English: Post Medieval silver button. The button is sub spherical and is constructed in to halves which have been soldered together. It has an integral suspension loop and is decorated on its outer face with four oval stylised flower? motifs set in solid borders. The button has a central nipple which is also contained by a border. Near the loop the button has a stamped mark, probably of the maker, which is hard to interpret.
The button may date to the 17th Century.
Compare copper alloy buttons from a London context dated to the 17th Century in Brian Read, 'Metal Buttons' (Langport, 2005), numbers 469-473. The presence of what appears to be a maker's mark is very unusual for buttons recorded through the Treasure Act. |
