This award recognizes the Department of Energy Contractor project team responsible for the design and construction of the 200 West Pump and Treatment System at the Hanford Site. This facility is designed to remediate the five square mile groundwater plume resulting from 50 years of plutonium finishing operations at the Hanford site. Major groundwater contaminates included carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, nitrates, radionuclides and metals with carbon tetrachloride levels exceeding 1000 times drinking water standards. This facility is the key component to the remedy which will restore the groundwater to drinking water standards. The 200 West Pump and Treatment System is the only Department of Energy Environmental Management facility to be awarded the leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold Award for design and construction. Cost of operations was also a key facility design consideration and was designed to operate as an unmanned facility. The team successfully completed the project within tight cost and schedule constraints and met the complex technical requirements for the 200 West Pump and Treatment System. This was accomplished through excellent team coordination, innovative thinking and proactive management of issues.
