Title
2009 T623 Post Medieval Pin
Description
English: Treasure Case 2009 T623

Date: Post Medieval, 16th century.

Date of Discovery: 7th October 2009

Circumstances of discovery: Whilst searching with a metal detector.

Description: Incomplete cast silver pin head. It is a hollow sphere with applied filigree decoration. The head is divided into upper and lower hemisphere sections by a band of filigree around the circumference. Both hemispheres contain three large filigree circles with one missing from the lower hemisphere due to damage. These circles are separated by a raised spherical knop; only one of these knops survives in the upper hemisphere and two in the lower hemisphere. Each of the large circles contains three smaller filigree circles arranged in a trefoil motif, with a central spherical knop where the three circles meet in the centre; one knop is missing from both hemispheres. At the apex of the head is a small circular hole and the opposing side had a break, and is partially missing, where the shaft would have extended from. It is 7.84mm in diameter, 6.98mm long and weighs 0.51 grams.

Disposition: Donated to Saffron Walden Museum

The object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently, it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
