Title
2009 T15 Medieval coin halfpenny of Richard II (gold plated)
Description
English: Treasure case 2009 T15: Medieval gold plated silver half penny of Richard II. North 1331(b).

silver halfpenny of King Richard II (1377-99), struck at the London mint. As an official coin of this period, it would have a silver fineness of 92.5%, the sterling standard. It weighs 0.69g, making it among the heaviest of its type on record. It corresponds to type 2 in the Withers classification (P & BR Withers, Halfpennies and farthings: Edward III and Richard II (2002)). Single coins would not normally be eligible to be considered as Treasure. However, this coin has been altered by being gilded, something that one would expect to remove it from normal currency and usage. It is thus analogous to coins turned into jewellery - pendants and brooches.
