Title
2008 T576 Post Medieval bell fragment
Description
English: Treasure 2008 T576 Post Medieval silver bell fragment

The bell is hemispherical with a broken loop at its apex. Is it undecorated. The surviving section is distorted. It is 9.4mm long, and 17.18mm by 8.75mm wide. The wall is 0.54mm thick. Weight 0.91 grams.

British Museum Report:

Half of a small silver bell, crushed. Whereas similar bells were sewn onto clothing as fashionable accessories in the late medieval period, especially in the 15th Century, bells of this kind were, in the 16th Century, used for jesses on hawks and falcons; collars for dogs and cats; as well as being an element in horse furniture.

Probably 16th Century.

As such, due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
