Title
2008 T427 Early Medieval Finger Ring
Description
English: Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate gold content for the ring of 92-96%, a silver content of 3-6%, with 1-2% copper. The ring weighs 4.35 grams.

The ring is formed of a sub-circular hoop of two plain rods twisted together, with two finer, beaded wires individually in between them and all tapering to the back, where the ends have been hammered into a short, plain section; width, 22 mm (max). This form of ring represents a late Viking type dating to the 11th century and possibly into the early 12th century in Scandinavia. It may be compared with examples from Denmark, e.g. Lundby Krat, and there is one from Gotland, Sweden, on display in the British Museum (F. Lindahl, 2003, Symboler i guld og sølv. Nationalmuseets fingerringe 1000-1700-årene, Copenhagen, p. 75, no. 8; BM registration no. AF.539)
