Description

Der Wille zur Repräsentation tritt in den großen Sakralbauten der Stadt hervor. Die drei Pfarrkirchen waren anfangs nur Hallen und wurden schon früh zu Basiliken ausgebaut. Sankt Nikolai, die älteste Stralsunder Pfarrkirche, nimmt unter den Kirchen des Ostseeraumes eine Sonderstellung ein. Hier werden als anderwärtig Einflüsse der französischen Kathedralgotik sichtbar. Ursprünglich hatte die Kirche nur einen Turm. Im 14. Jahrhunderts erfolgte der Ausbau zur doppeltürmigen Anlage. Sankt Nikolai war die Hauptkirche der Stadt.

Der Sakralbau wurde Anfang der 1990er Jahre umfassend restauriert. Nach Neueindeckung der Dächer, nach Instandsetzung von Außenwänden und Turmteilen wurde danach der Innenraum denkmalpflegerisch und farbursprünglich erneuert. Ihren Namen erhielt die Kirche nach dem Schutzpatron der Seefahrer, Nikolaus von Myra.
