Title
2007 T7 Post Medieval dress accessory
Description
English: A silver gilt Post-Medieval dress fitting Incomplete 16th century silver gilt dress fitting. The object is sub-circular in plan and domed in section, having a flat reverse. It is cast in the shape of a five petalled flower or rose, each petal having a central transverse rib which gives it the form of a wave. Between each petal is a small rounded knop. At the centre of the petals is a sub square domed 'boss'. This is decorated with at least two raised lines, if not three. The gilt survives almost intact, though small patches of the underlying silver do show through. This may be a cap badge, see TAR 2004, #232 Arreton, Isle of Wight, for comparison. The reverse of the fitting is plain and appears to have no surviving gilt. A significant proportion of the centre of the reverse is blackened with oxidisation, otherwise the edges show as silver. On the clear silver parts it is possible to see tooling marks. Within the black portion it is possible to see the rectangular scar where the fitting probably accommodated a hook.

The fitting is 9.98mm in diameter and weighs 0.83g.

Disposition: Colchester Museums have disclaimed their interest in this object. The object contains a minimum of 10% silver and is over 300 years old. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content. Caroline McDonald Colchester Museums January 2007
