Title |
2006 T307c, socketed axehead from Ludham, Norfolk |
||
Description |
English: Socketed axehead, all of mouth missing (ancient break), cutting edge missing (recent damage), faceted octagonal body. A small faceted fragment, probably of the same axe, is lodged in the jagged aperture, which has been squashed by hammering.
The findspot is c.20m east of another incomplete socketed axehead found in March 1985. Date: Late Bronze Age, c.1000 - c.700 BC. Dimensions: Length >86mm (97mm including lodged fragment). Width >47mm. Thickness 18mm. Weight 189.5g. The current evidence is insufficient to suggest that this and the much earlier find are from a dispersed hoard. In the absence of good evidence for such dispersal the association between the axes is not secure and as such they fall outside the provisions of the 2002 Designation Order. The possibility of an association should, however, be kept in mind if further finds are made on the site in the future. |
