Title
2006 T100a, Anglo-Saxon silver hooked-tag from Pocklington, East Yorkshire
Description
English: Anglo-Saxon silver hooked-tag

Date: mid 9th century

Silver hooked-tag with a sub-circular/rhomboid shield plate with two pierced attachment lugs protruding at the top forming a scalloped edge. The plate is decorated with a central sub-rectangular motif with concave sides, with an incised interior frame filled in niello. Around this are disposed four crouching animals. Only two of these are successful, but the general impression is typical of the zoomorphic decoration of the time, a devolved Trewhiddle style, with the creatures standing out on a background of niello. The lower end tapers to form the hook and is chamfered at the sides: the sub-triangular field thus formed is incised with crude lines. The back of the piece is plain

Dimensions: Weight 2.2g, Width 1.6cm, Height 2.2cm

Discussion: Hooked tags were widely used in Anglo-Saxon and medieval England: they were common fasteners, with a multitude of applications - some were employed for fixing garments, others as purse attachments.
