Title |
2005 T563, Post-Medieval silver button from Corbridge, Northumberland |
||
Description |
English: Post-Medieval silver button
Circular sleeve button made from thin silver sheet, down-turned border, the top stamped with device of two conjoined hearts surmounted by a crown on a stippled ground. Attachment loop at centre of reverse.
Diam: 14mm.
The device may commemorate the marriage of Catherine of Braganza and Charles II of England in 1662. This example represents a common type: identical buttons have been reported through the Treasure Act such as one from Rochester, see Treasure Annual Report 2001, no. 153, and from the Eye area in Suffolk, see Treasure Annual Report 2003, no. 224. A further button was acquired through the Treasure Act by The British Museum in 2001 (2001 T364, now Department of Prehistory and Europe, 2002, 7-11,1). Another example was found in Virginia, USA in the 1960s: see Noel Hulme, Artefacts from Colonial America, New York 1969, fig. 22.
Late 17th Century.
Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. |
