Title
2005 T449, two Bronze Age axes from Hopton, Shropshire
Description
English: Undecorated flat axe found in close proximity to axe described in record HESH-297346 Flat axe. Essentially complete, but significant loss from corrosion at the cutting edge and butt. Much of patina has flaked away, removing surface detail, but where intact it reveals a neat fluted design on the lower blade. This comprises longitudinal furrows which diverge as the blade splays; closest to the cutting edge there are three furrows to either side and a central triangular one. The sides of the implement are very slightly raised, possibly just as a consequence of this particular decorative treatment. There is possibly a weak stop bevel crossing a little above the middle. Dimensions: Length: 163 mm; width cutting edge: 79.5 mm; thickness: 12 mm; weight: 372.5 g Identification Although not all the detail can be seen on these two implements, it is clear that they do not share all the same characteristics. Nevertheless, the features observable on both place them in the same phase of the Early Bronze Age, termed the Mile Cross - Colleonard phase. This dates to around the twentieth century BC. Conclusion These two axe heads would have been in use in the same phase of the Early Bronze Age and could have been buried at about the same time. If they were originally buried together as a closed deposit such as a hoard, they have evidently since been disturbed and dispersed. In the absence of good evidence for such dispersal the association between the axes is not secure and as such they fall outside the provisions of the 2002 Designation Order.
