Deutsch: 03.02.2001 37445 Walkenried: Das Kloster Walkenried ist eine ehemalige Zisterzienserabtei in Walkenried. Der Gründungskonvent zog 1129 ein und begann mit dem Bau der romanischen Kirche. Die Blütezeit des Klosters lag im 12. und 13. Jahrhundert. Der gotische Kirchenneubau wurde vor 1209 initiiert. Im Jahre 1290 konnte die Kirche geweiht werden. Mit fast 100 m Länge war sie damals eine der größten Kirchen Norddeutschlands. Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts begann der Niedergang. Im Jahr 1546 trat das Ordenskapitel zur Reformation über. Der weitere Abriss der Kirchenruine wurde 1817 verboten. Der Gebäudekomplex umfasst die Ruine der Klosterkirche sowie das größtenteils erhaltene gotische Klausurgebäude, 2006 zum Zisterziensermuseum Kloster Walkenried ausgebaut.
