Summary

[edit]
Description

After a visit to Tallinn in September 2014 for a tourist holiday, I always had it planned to return back to visit the railway system possibly to tie it in with the other two Baltic States of Latvia and Lithuania. Cross-border rail services between the countries was poor to say the least, with Latvia into Lithuania still only possible at weekends. However much planning and research went in to putting a trip together for May 2019.

I flew into Tallinn with the objective to cover all passenger lines before heading into Latvia. Tallinn remains the main passenger service hub with a depot a few kilometres outside of the city centre at Paaskula. The original fleet inherited from the Soviet Union Railways after breaking up in the early 1990s was replaced in its entirety with a fleet of Stadler Flirt EMUs and as seen here DMUs between 2012 and 2014. Units are all fully wheelchair accessible, air conditioned and fitted with WiFi.

Seen here on 20 May 2019 is 3-car units 2305 "Mulgi Express" with 2-car 2234 on left forming train 16, 15:31 Tallinn to Valga and Koidula - the train splitting at Tartu. To the right is again a 3-car set no. 2320 "*Luule" on train 245, 14:43 Tallinn to Viljandi.
